Caribbean Open World: What to Find Between Missions

Treasure maps, smuggler's coves, convoys, plantations, uncharted islands, pirate hunters — how to prioritize and what's worth your time.

The Caribbean in Black Flag Resynced is massive — easily the largest open world in the series up to this point. It's easy to feel adrift. Here's everything you can do between story missions, and what's worth prioritizing.

Open World Activities

Treasure Maps and Buried Treasure

Found in chests across the world. Each map shows a specific island, a landmark (rock, tree, ruin), and the dig spot. Buried treasure gives large cash rewards and sometimes elite upgrade plans. Always dig when you find a map — some elite upgrades are only obtainable this way.

Treasure maps show a drawing of the dig location relative to a landmark. Cross-reference with your world map and sail to the matching island.

Smuggler's Coves

Hidden coastal caves marked with a cave icon once you sail near. Most require underwater access (diving bell for deeper ones). Inside: multiple chests and sometimes a tavern.

Smuggler's coves are hidden sea caves with treasure and occasional ambushes. Look for them along rocky coastlines.

Convoys

Groups of military ships (blue icon when close). Risky but rewarding — loaded with metal and money. Escorted by a frigate or man o' war; make sure you're prepared.

Plantations

Smaller restricted land areas (similar to forts but agricultural). Full of guards, chests, and a warehouse with high-value goods. Stealth is the play — shoot the alarm bell, whistle-lure guards one by one, loot the warehouse.

Plantation fields are perfect for the whistle-lure loop. Sugarcane is as good as tall grass for stealth.

Uncharted Islands

Small islands without a harbor or fast-travel. Worth visiting — they often have Animus fragments, chests, and (on some) dead pirates with treasure maps. Beach the Jackdaw and explore on foot.

Naval Contracts

Picked up from fort harbormasters. Naval-specific missions: escort merchants, sink pirate fleets, patrol trade routes. Pay well and reward metal.

Pirate Hunters

As notoriety rises from attacking military ships, pirate hunter ships chase you. Defeating them reduces notoriety and yields captured ships for your fleet. The highest notoriety sends legendary pirate hunters (upgraded frigates/brigs).

The Caribbean map reveals itself as you sync viewpoints and explore. Don't rely on fast travel for everything — sailing manually reveals hidden locations.

Sail manually between missions. Don't fast-travel everywhere. The game's best moments — random storms, impromptu convoys, whale encounters, shanties at sunset — only happen when you're actually sailing.
