New Combat System Explained: Parry, Posture, and Flow

The old counter-kill loop is dead. Here's how posture-based combat works, how to beat every enemy type, and how to clear groups without taking damage.

If you played the 2013 original, unlearning old habits is the hardest part of Resynced. Spamming counter will get you killed. The new system rewards patience, positioning, and aggression in equal measure. Let's break it down.

The Core Loop: Attack, Parry, Dodge-Vault

Five moves define combat in Resynced:

  • Light Attack: Fast sword strikes. Builds combo on hit. Three consecutive lights on a blocking enemy stagger them.
  • Heavy Attack: Charged strike. Breaks guards and deals massive posture damage. Essential against officers, brutes, and shield enemies. Brief recovery if it misses — don't spam it.
  • Parry (Counter): Tap (don't hold) when the enemy flashes red. A perfect parry staggers and opens them for instant execution. Mistimed = block (reduced damage) or full hit.
  • Dodge: Roll in any direction. Dodging toward an enemy vaults over them — your panic button for heavies and groups.
  • Kick/Sweep: Trips agile enemies, pushes back brutes. Low damage, creates space fast.

Posture System

Every enemy has a white posture bar under their health. Deplete it (heavy attacks, perfect parries, combo finishers) and they enter a "broken" state — instant kill regardless of remaining health. Regular soldiers break fast; captains and officers need sustained pressure.

Key insight: You don't need to drain health to kill. Posture break = kill. Against tough enemies, focus on posture damage with heavies and parry follow-ups rather than chip damage.
The new combat UI makes posture (white bar) and health clearly visible for every enemy.

Enemy Type Breakdown

Regular Soldiers (redcoats / Spanish infantry)

Cannon fodder. Two lights or one heavy breaks posture. Predictable 1-2 swing patterns. The threat is numbers — use dodge-vault to reposition to the edge of the crowd and pick them off there.

Agile Soldiers (dagger scouts)

Fast, dodge your strikes, throw knives. Most annoying type in groups. Use kick/sweep — one kick knocks them down, follow with a ground execution. Don't chase; parry their fast attacks.

Brutes (axe/hammer wielders)

Their attacks cannot be parried — deeper red flash with yellow charge. Always dodge sideways or vault over them. After their big swing misses, they have a long recovery window — land two heavies. Never fight two brutes at once; smoke bomb if that happens.

Heavy attacks break brute posture but leave you exposed if they miss. Make sure the target is committed to a swing before you wind up.

Captains / Officers (sword-and-pistol)

They parry your lights, counter your heavies, and will shoot you if you give them distance. Pattern: bait their attack → perfect parry → one heavy as they stagger → repeat. If they draw a pistol, dodge immediately — bullets can't be parried. Berserk darts trivialize them if you don't want a fair fight.

Gunners / Marksmen

Perched on walls, rails, rooftops. They take a few seconds to aim — that's your window. Close distance fast, take cover, or free-aim shoot them first. Always kill gunners before engaging ground troops in forts.

Group Fighting Strategy

  1. Keep moving. Standing still in a crowd is a death sentence. After every 1-2 kills, dodge-vault to the edge.
  2. Use smoke offensively. Smoke bomb → 3-4 ground executions clears half a group faster than any sword combo.
  3. Shoot gunners and officers first. Free-aim a pistol into them before they act.
  4. Watch red flashes from all directions. You can chain-parry multiple enemies in sequence if you time it right — it looks and feels incredible.
  5. Environment is a weapon. Kick enemies off cliffs, walls, and ship rails for instant kills. Shoot gunpowder barrels when enemies cluster.
Chain executions flow naturally after posture breaks — once you learn to read the red flashes, group fights become rhythmic.

What NOT to Do (Old Habits to Break)

  • Don't hold parry waiting. It doesn't work anymore and leaves you open to heavies.
  • Don't try to parry everything. Brute attacks, gunfire, and some boss moves will land.
  • Don't sleep on dodge-vault. It's the strongest defensive tool in the remake.
  • Don't hoard tools. Smoke and darts are cheap and restocked at every harbormaster. Use them.
