Some things aren't in the tutorial. Here are mechanics, shortcuts, and hidden features that will make your pirate life dramatically smoother.
Combat Secrets
- Chain parries across multiple enemies. After parrying one enemy, hold toward another attacker to chain the parry without resetting.
- Pistols break heavy attacks. If a brute winds up a heavy swing, a quick-shot to the chest staggers them out of it.
- Shoot enemies mid-leap. Vault over an enemy, fire in mid-air, land and execute immediately.
- Sleep-darted enemies can be ground-assassinated for a quiet kill, same as a normal takedown.
- Berserk darts work on every enemy type (officers and brutes included). A berserk officer clears half a fort by himself.

Naval Secrets
- Brace for impact. Lower sails when a wave hits to reduce damage.
- Fire barrels can be shot. If chased by fire barrels, shoot them before sailing over.
- Sail perpendicular to waves in storms — head-on into rogue waves for less capsizing damage.
- Board any disabled ship regardless of your health. Even at 10% health, you can board and choose Repair to heal mid-engagement.
- Marine animals don't attack the Jackdaw. Sharks are only a threat while swimming/diving.
Stealth Secrets
- Smoke at your feet doesn't count as detection if no enemy sees you throw it. It just creates visual obstruction.
- Assassinate from hay bales, wells, leaf piles as enemies walk past — same as from grass.
- Double sleep dart two talking guards simultaneously — both fall asleep without alerting others.
- Bribe heralds to reduce notoriety cheaper than paying full pirate hunter removal. Find town criers on streets.

Open World Secrets
- Save anywhere. Game autosaves on boarding/disembarking the Jackdaw, syncing viewpoints, and completing missions. No manual save needed.
- Tavern minigames (fanorona, nine men's morris) earn money early game. Decent way to pass time.
- Fast-travel to the Jackdaw from anywhere on land by selecting the Jackdaw icon on the map.
- Dead bodies in tall grass are never found. Ever. The most powerful stealth "exploit" in the game.
- Treasure maps are readable anywhere. Open a map from inventory, cross-reference with the world map, fast-travel there. No need to be on the correct island first.
Small Details Worth Noticing
- Edward sings along with shanties sometimes on long sails if you leave the camera on him.
- Crew comments on your outfit, combat performance, and weather changes.
- Hidden islands contain AC easter eggs and references. Explore unnamed islands.
- Beaches have ambient life — turtles hatching, crabs scuttling. Stop and look around sometimes.
