Fort Capture: Complete Assault Walkthrough

Attacking a fort is half naval, half ground combat. Bombard towers, breach walls, shoot alarm bells, and assassinate the commander — here's how to do it methodically.

Forts are massive coastal fortifications with dozens of soldiers, mortar batteries, and heavy cannons. Capturing one gives you regional control — reduced pirate hunter spawns, revealed collectibles, and a fast-travel point. Here's the methodical approach.

Phase 1: Naval Bombardment

Before docking, destroy 3-5 defensive towers (cannons + mortars) from the water.

  • Start with mortars at max range (~800m). Pummel towers one by one. Towers have poor accuracy at this range, but watch for incoming mortar fire (red water circles).
  • Keep moving. Never sit still in fort range.
  • Destroy every tower before docking. A single surviving tower fires on you during the landing animation and can kill you.
Mortar fire slams into fort walls. Stay at range and take out towers systematically before moving in.

Phase 2: Entering the Fort

Dock at the marker and disembark through a breach in the outer wall.

  • Shoot alarm bells first. As soon as you're inside, use Eagle Vision to locate bells and free-aim shoot them. No bells = no reinforcements even if detected.
  • Clear walls first. Gunners on battlements will shoot you while you fight on the ground. Climb up or use sleep/berserk darts.
  • Use the environment. Forts are full of gunpowder barrels and explosive crates. A pistol shot to a barrel cluster can clear an entire courtyard.
Breaching the outer wall. From here it's pure ground combat — clear walls before you deal with ground troops.

Phase 3: The Fort Commander

After killing enough defenders, the commander appears (special icon). Tough officer-type with high health, sword-and-pistol.

  • Either fight head-on (parry, heavy, repeat) or assassinate stealthily.
  • If you cleared the fort quietly, the commander patrols an inner room or battlement. Air assassination is easiest.
  • After killing the commander, run to the flagpole and raise the pirate flag to complete capture.
The fort commander duel. Parry his sword strikes, watch for pistol shots, and land heavy attacks after his combos miss.

Sneak in from land: Before attacking, park the Jackdaw in a nearby cove and swim in. Many forts have unguarded cliff approaches on the landward side. This skips the entire naval phase, though you need strong stealth to clear 30+ guards undetected.

After Capture

Forts generate tax income (collected from harbormaster periodically), provide a fast-travel point, unlock stationed naval contracts, and reduce pirate hunter activity in the region.
